Storms, outages and the fault that arrives late

The Beaches take weather that the rest of the service area only reads about. This part of Florida sees roughly 68 thunderstorm days in a year, and on top of that the ocean end of Duval County has been through multi-day power outages in living memory — Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017, Helene in 2024.

What that does to a kitchen full of built-in appliances is not always immediate, and that is the part worth knowing. A surge or a dirty restoration of supply can damage a control board without stopping it. The appliance carries on, apparently fine, and then a single function goes: one mode that no longer works while everything else is healthy, an element that heats on some cycles and not others, a display that no longer matches what the machine is doing. Weeks can pass between the weather and the symptom, which is exactly why almost nobody connects the two when they call.

We ask about it anyway. If an appliance changed behaviour in the same month as heavy weather or an outage, say so — it moves the board and the supply to the top of the list rather than the bottom, and it stops us fitting a new element into a board that will destroy it.

Salt air is what actually drives our work here

A few blocks from the Atlantic, corrosion is the constant. It does not break anything in a single event. It works on parts nobody looks at and it shows up as symptoms that seem unrelated.

Door hinge pins are first. Salt stiffens the pivots, the door stops closing with even pressure, and it ends up standing a millimetre or two off the seal along the top edge. What the owner notices is that the oven no longer bakes the way it did. Almost nobody connects that to a hinge.

Fasteners are next. Screws in the back panel and under the cooking surface seize themselves in, and the discovery happens on the day the appliance finally has to come apart. On a Beaches call we allow time for that, because the repair behind the panel is often the quick part.

Ventilation hardware takes the worst of it. Roof and wall caps, backdraft damper pivots and external blower housings sit outside in salt air all year. Dampers seize, sometimes half open, which strangles the airflow and lets outside air and humidity back down the duct. If a Neptune Beach hood has got loud, we check outside the building before we quote a blower — a hood that is loud while moving very little air is usually loud because of restriction, not because of the motor.

Outdoor grills this close to the ocean are on a shorter clock than the manufacturer’s expectations assume, and there is no fixing that beyond covering them and rinsing them.

Small kitchens, big appliances

A lot of the housing here is older beach cottages that have been remodelled around modern equipment. That produces the familiar squeeze: a cabinet opening widened by hand, tight side clearances, not much air behind the appliance, and ductwork inherited from whatever was in the kitchen before. An appliance with no airflow around it runs hot behind the fascia, and heat is what shortens electronics.
