The cooktop burns gas. The oven heats electrically. They share a fascia, a set of knobs and a control board, and beyond that they have almost nothing in common — different fuel, different safety circuits, different failure modes. That matters on the phone. When someone tells us the oven has gone cold and the front-left burner will not light, they usually describe it as one problem with the range. It is almost always two problems that happened to become noticeable in the same week, and we diagnose them separately. It also means a quote for one is not a quote for the other, and we say so before we drive out. ## The gas half Sealed burners are mechanically simple and they fail in a small number of predictable ways. The most common call is an igniter that keeps clicking after the flame is already burning. On the cooktop, a spark module throws a spark across an electrode gap and the flame either catches or it does not. In the oven, an igniter has to glow hot enough to both ignite the gas and to draw enough current through the safety valve circuit to hold that valve open. It is a clever arrangement and it has one very characteristic failure. An oven igniter does not usually die. It weakens. It still glows, so it looks fine through the vent, but it no longer pulls the current the valve needs to open on time. The result is an oven that takes two, then three, then five minutes to light, and finally lights with an audible thump because gas has had time to collect in the cavity before ignition. Owners often describe this as the oven being slow to preheat. It is not preheating slowly, it is not lighting. If your oven has started doing that, it is worth having looked at sooner rather than later. The delay only ever gets longer. ## The cooktop side Sealed burners are simple and they break in a short list of ways. An igniter that keeps clicking after the flame is up is the call we get most often, and roughly half the time the owner can fix it in two minutes with a paper towel. Something boiled over, liquid wicked down to the electrode, and the module is now blind to a flame that is burning right in front of it. Dry the electrode. Lift the cap and set it back down square. If it still clicks after that, the electrode ceramic is probably cracked and the spark is leaking to ground. Uneven flame is the second. A ring that burns tall on one side and lazy on the other has partially blocked ports, and that is a cleaning job rather than a gas-supply problem. The third is the one that is not a fault at all: a single spark module drives every electrode, so all of them fire when you turn one knob. That is by design. Burner caps are also worth a mention. They are not interchangeable across positions on most ranges, and after a thorough kitchen clean they frequently come back in the wrong spots. A cap on the wrong base sits at the wrong height over the ports and gives you exactly the symptoms of a failing burner. ## Old kitchens, new ranges A good number of these ranges live in kitchens that were not designed around them. The 1900s through 1930s houses in Riverside, Avondale and Old Ortega have cabinet openings that were sized for a 30-inch range, and a 36-inch professional range going into one of them means a cabinet run gets rebuilt. Those installations often end up tight on clearance at the sides and short on air at the back, and a range that cannot breathe runs hot at the control panel and takes its electronics with it eventually. The electrical side surprises people too. An all-gas range still needs power for the spark module, the oven control and the light, and older kitchens frequently do not have a dedicated circuit behind the range. Sharing that circuit with a counter full of small appliances causes intermittent faults that look like a failing board. ## Salt air on the coast The beach ZIPs are hard on ranges in a slow, unglamorous way. Burner caps and bases are sized per burner and they do get swapped after cleaning. - The broiler lights but the flame is patchy across the burner — Grease and carbon in the broiler ports, or a burner that has warped slightly from repeated heat cycling and no longer sits parallel to the deck. - There is a faint gas smell for a second or two at ignition — Usually delayed ignition from a slow igniter or a partially blocked port, which lets a small amount of gas accumulate before the flame catches. Most of what we replace on them relates to the low end of the burner range, to griddle thermostats, or to valves that have stiffened with cooking grease. ## A cooking surface with nothing underneath it A rangetop is the professional cooking surface without the oven — it drops into a counter, the cabinet below is yours to use, and the ovens usually live in a wall somewhere else in the kitchen. That is the layout in a lot of the newer built-in kitchens in Nocatee, Shearwater and the Pablo Creek Reserve side of Jacksonville, and it changes what breaks. There is no oven cavity, no door hinge, no bake element. Nearly everything that goes wrong is at the burner, the valve, or the accessory module. ## The simmer is the canary The most interesting thing about a professional rangetop is not the high flame, it is the low one. A dual-stacked sealed burner is built to run from a hard sear right down to a flame small enough to hold chocolate or a beurre blanc without breaking it. That low flame is the first thing to go and it is an excellent diagnostic signal. Here is why. The high flame is fed by a lot of gas through a lot of ports, and losing a few ports to blockage barely changes it. The simmer runs on a small fraction of that flow through a much smaller path, so the same blockage that is invisible at full output makes the simmer sputter, dance or drop out. When someone tells us the burner is fine except that it will not simmer, we already know roughly where we are going. The second common cause of a lost simmer is a burner cap that is not quite sitting flat. Caps are position-specific on most rangetops and they get shuffled during cleaning. Half a millimetre of tilt does nothing to the high flame and ruins the low one. ## Valves stiffen, and grease is why A rangetop knob should turn with a smooth, even resistance and push in without a fight. When it goes stiff, gritty or notchy, what has usually happened is that cooking grease has migrated down the stem and cooked hard around the valve taper. The fix is to strip the valve, clean it properly and regrease it with a high-temperature valve grease. It is not a job for household lubricant sprayed at the shaft — those thin out at burner temperatures and end up making the problem worse a month later. Forcing a stiff valve is how valve stems get snapped, and a snapped stem turns a cleaning job into a parts job. ## Griddles, charbroilers and French tops The accessory modules are where the electrical faults live on an otherwise mechanical appliance. A griddle is temperature-controlled, and its thermostat depends on a sensor sitting in firm contact with the underside of the plate. If that contact is lost, or the plate has crowned from being run empty at high heat, the surface develops a hot band and a cool band and no amount of adjusting the dial fixes it. We check plate flatness before we condemn a thermostat, because a warped plate reads like a thermostat fault. A charbroiler collects more grease than anything else on the appliance, and the grease finds the igniter gap first. A coil under the surface generates an alternating magnetic field, and the pan's own steel resists it and gets hot. The glass warms up only because the pan is sitting on it. That is why the surface cools so quickly and why a spill on an induction top wipes off instead of baking on. Diagnostically, it means most of the classic cooktop symptoms are gone. There is no flame to be uneven, no igniter to click, no burner cap to seat. What replaces them is a smaller list of electrical and thermal problems, plus one category that is not a fault at all — the cooktop doing exactly what it should with cookware that cannot work on it. ## Pan detection is usually the cookware By far the most common call is a pan that used to work and now does not, or a new pan that never worked. Induction needs a ferrous base with real contact area under the element. Three things break that: A base that has warped. Pans bow upward in the middle after enough thermal cycling, and once the centre lifts, the coupling drops off. The pan may still sit flat enough to look fine on the counter. A base that is only partly magnetic. Some clad pans have a thin magnetic disc sandwiched in the middle of the base, and once it is worn or delaminated the coupling becomes marginal — the element cycles on and off as detection comes and goes. A pan that is simply too small for the ring it is on. Detection has a minimum diameter. Move a small saucepan to a smaller element and it usually wakes up. The two-minute test costs nothing: press a refrigerator magnet against the base. It should grab hard, and it should grab across the whole bottom, not just in the centre. ## Heat under the glass is the real enemy Everything clever about an induction cooktop lives in a thin space between the glass and the cabinet below, and it is cooled by moving air across it. That is the part installers get wrong most often. If a drawer front, a filler panel or a stack of baking trays blocks the airflow path, the cooktop will keep working — it simply pulls its own power back so the electronics stay inside their limits. Owners describe this as an element that loses its heat halfway through cooking. It is the appliance protecting itself. Before we condemn a power board, we check what the airflow underneath is actually doing. There is no leak, no noise, no smell. What happens instead is that a cook who has made the same loaf for six years starts getting a pale crust and a dense crumb, blames themselves, adjusts the recipe, and only calls somebody eight months later when the Thanksgiving pie will not set. By the time an oven is obviously broken it has usually been wrong for a long while. That is why the first thing we do is measure. We put a calibrated probe in the cavity and watch a full heat-and-hold cycle against the set point, because the display on the front tells you what the oven intends to do and nothing about what it is actually doing. ## Where drift comes from There are three usual sources, and they feel identical to the cook. The temperature sensor is the first. It is a resistance probe, and as it ages its resistance curve moves. An oven with a sensor reading high will always come up short, and it will be worse at the top of the range than the bottom — 25 degrees off at 350 can be 60 off at 500, which is why the problem shows up at bread temperatures before it shows up at roasting temperatures. The door gasket is the second. Gaskets harden, take a set and stop sealing at the corners. Heat escaping past a gasket makes the oven cycle more often to compensate, which shows up as long preheats and an oven that never quite settles. The third is the hinges, and it is the one people never guess. ## Heavy doors and tired hinges A built-in oven door is heavy — glass, insulation, a steel skin — and every time it swings, the whole weight passes through two small pivots. Over years those pivots wear, the door drops slightly at the outer edge, and the top of the door is left standing a couple of millimetres off the seal. You cannot see two millimetres across a door edge. But an oven trying to hold 375 degrees against a two-millimetre slot along its top edge is fighting a constant leak, and it never wins cleanly. It overshoots, it recovers, it overshoots again, and the temperature swing at the food is far wider than the number on the display suggests. French-door and side-swing doors carry their weight differently but they sag in the same way. The damper comes third. A backdraft damper is a set of light flaps that should swing open under airflow and fall closed when the hood stops. Grease gums them shut. Salt corrodes the pivots. A damper that only half opens strangles the whole system, and one that will not close lets outside air, humidity and insects come back down the duct. ## The 400 CFM line, and why doors slam If your hood is a serious one and your house is reasonably tight, there is a question worth asking: where is the air coming from? A hood only exhausts what it can replace. Most of our work here is fitting, ductwork and wiring. ## What a Mandarin call usually turns out to be Across enough visits a pattern emerges, and in 32223 it is consistent enough to say out loud: more often than not the appliance is fine and the installation around it is not. So the order of a Mandarin diagnosis is deliberate. Most of our work here is wall ovens and ventilation. ## Getting the appliance out is half the job Kitchens of this size are built around tall cabinet towers, and a double wall oven set at chest height in a face-frame tower is one of the more awkward things in a house to service. The appliance is heavy, its whole weight is carried on a frame that was cut to fit it, and the trim that hides the gap has to come off before anything else can move. None of that is a problem as long as it is planned for. It becomes a problem when a repair is quoted as though the part were the job. On a Deerwood call we allow time for the appliance to come forward, for the run to be protected, and for two people where two people are genuinely needed — an oven brought out on its own is an oven dropped on somebody's floor. The same is true of the electrical side. It does not mean everything needs replacing. It does mean that if we are already inside the cabinetry for one job, it is worth five minutes to look at the rest, and it means we would rather tell you what is coming than let you find out one appliance at a time. ## What we get called for most here Wall ovens, more than anything. These are big kitchens with double ovens that do serious work at holidays, and the two faults we see repeatedly are temperature drift and hinge sag. Drift is the quiet one. The sensor's resistance curve moves as it ages, the oven comes up short, and the error grows with temperature — an oven 25 degrees low at 350 can be 60 low at 500. Bakers notice long before roasters do. Hinge sag is the one nobody guesses. A coil under the glass generates an alternating magnetic field. A ferrous pan sitting in that field resists it and heats up. The glass warms only because the pan is on it. It is the cooktop protecting itself from a situation where it would generate heat with no load to absorb it. ## Three ways a pan stops working **It warped.** This is the commonest and the most surprising. Pans bow upward in the middle after enough thermal cycling, particularly if they have been heated empty or plunged into cold water while hot. Once the centre lifts, the coupling drops away. The pan may still look flat on the counter — a bow of half a millimetre is enough to matter and is invisible to the eye. Spin the pan on a flat counter: if it rocks or pivots, that is your answer. **It was only partly magnetic to start with.** A lot of clad cookware has a thin magnetic disc sandwiched into the base rather than a magnetic body. That works until the disc delaminates or wears, and then the coupling becomes marginal. The symptom is distinctive: the element cycles on and off by itself as detection comes and goes, which looks far more like an appliance fault than a cookware fault. **It is too small for the ring.** Detection has a minimum diameter for each element. A small saucepan on a large element will simply not be seen. Move it to a smaller element and it wakes up. People often discover this after rearranging their pans. Block that path — a drawer packed to the top, a filler panel added during a remodel, a stack of baking sheets — and the cooktop pulls its own power back to stay within limits. Touch controls that stop responding. Capacitive controls read a film of water or a damp cloth as a finger. Every foot of horizontal run costs airflow. Flexible duct where rigid should have been used costs a great deal. We cannot rebuild a duct on a service call, but we can tell you plainly when the hood is healthy and the ductwork is the limit, which saves you buying a blower that will not help. This comes up constantly in remodelled kitchens, where a current professional hood has been connected to a duct that was routed decades ago for something far smaller. **The damper.** A backdraft damper is a set of light flaps that should open under airflow and fall closed when the hood stops. Grease gums them. Salt corrodes the pivots — in Neptune Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach and the older parts of St. Augustine, the outdoor cap is usually the first thing to go. A damper stuck half open strangles the system; one that will not close lets outside air, humidity and insects back down the duct. **The blower itself.** Last, not first. Here is what each one looks like from the kitchen, and the order a technician works through them. ## A short list, but not a simple one A convection steam oven does everything a conventional oven does and then adds water to the problem. It has a heating element, a fan and a control board like any other oven, plus a steam generator, a water supply of some kind, a level-sensing arrangement, a drain path, and a door seal that has to hold humidity rather than only heat. The good news is that the list of things which actually fail is short. The awkward part is that several of them announce themselves in the same way — as steam that is not what it used to be — so the diagnosis is about separating them rather than recognising one. ## Falling steam output This is the most common call we take on this appliance, and it is almost never sudden. Everything that carries water away from the cavity — the drain path, the condensate channel and the arrangement below it — is somewhere minerals and food residue can settle out, and a restricted drain shows itself well before it blocks completely. A door seal that has hardened produces a similar picture from the opposite direction. Steam escapes past it, the generator keeps making more to hold the setpoint, the reservoir empties faster than it used to, and the cabinetry above the door starts to show the damp. On a first visit we check the seal along its whole length with the door closed on a strip of paper, because the part of a gasket that has stopped sealing is rarely the part you can see. ## Level sensing, and the faults that look electrical The oven has to know how much water it is holding. When the sensing surface develops a crust it reads wrong, and an appliance that misreads its own water level behaves in ways that look convincingly like a control fault: cycles that abandon themselves partway, a fill that never satisfies, an error state that clears on its own and returns the following week. This is exactly the fault we are trying to stop people paying for twice. Replacing a board because the appliance behaved erratically, when the appliance behaved erratically because it could not measure its own water, is an expensive way to change nothing. ## Getting to it Steam ovens are cabinet-mounted, they are heavy, and the service access is from the front rather than from behind. Where a generator assembly has to come out, the oven generally has to come out of its opening first, which means clearing the cabinetry, supporting the weight, and — on a plumbed model — isolating and disconnecting the supply before anything moves. That is worth knowing before the estimate rather than after it. A cheap part can still be a long job if it sits behind the generator, and a part that sounds serious can occasionally be reached in twenty minutes. We say which one it is, in writing, before anything is ordered. Parts are ordered against the model and the serial number, not the model alone. Manufacturers revise components mid-production, and on this equipment the correct seal, sensor or assembly frequently depends on where the appliance falls in that sequence. A photograph of the rating plate — usually behind the door or along an edge of the frame — is the fastest way to get it right first time, and it is the difference between a part arriving once and a part arriving twice. ## Maintenance, honestly Descaling is maintenance rather than repair, and it is the single thing that decides how long a generator lasts. Put it on a calendar set by how much steam you actually use rather than waiting for the appliance to prompt you, because the prompt is generally counting cycles rather than measuring anything. If the oven is a reservoir model you fill by hand, filling it with filtered water costs a jug and a habit and will add years to the generator. There is a point past which chemistry stops being enough. If a descale cycle restores performance for a week and then it fades again, the accessible deposits came off and a hard layered one stayed behind. At that point the generator has to be opened and cleaned mechanically, and no number of further cycles will get there. ## When it is worth repairing Built-in equipment is worth repairing for longer than freestanding equipment is, because replacing it is rarely just the appliance: the opening, the trim and sometimes the run of cabinetry either side are part of the decision. A seal, a sensor, an element or a board on an otherwise sound oven is normally the cheaper end of that comparison by a wide margin. We will tell you when it is not. Deposits build on the heating element as an insulating layer, so less of the element's heat crosses into the water, and the cook experiences that as longer cycles and drier food rather than as a fault. This stage can run for a year before anyone calls. **There is water left in the cavity after a cycle. Is that serious?** It usually means the drain path or the condensate channel is restricted rather than that anything has failed. It is worth dealing with early, because standing water keeps the door seal and the cavity floor wet between uses and turns a cleaning job into a parts job. **Can a steam oven fault damage the cabinetry around it?** It can, and that is the reason not to live with one. A door seal that has stopped sealing along part of its length lets steam out at the top of the door, and the cabinetry immediately above it takes that steam every time the oven runs. Fixing a gasket is inexpensive; refinishing joinery is not. **Is a reservoir steam oven better than a plumbed one?** Neither is better built. A reservoir model is filled by hand, which means you can put filtered water into it, and doing that consistently is the cheapest maintenance decision available to a steam oven owner. A plumbed model takes whatever the kitchen branch supplies unless the house treats it upstream. **How long does a steam oven repair usually take?** The diagnosis is normally one visit. Then we put a strip of paper in the top corner, close the door and pull, and the paper comes out without resistance. Do the same at the bottom and it grips hard. That is hinge sag, and it is one of the most common genuine faults on a built-in oven that is more than about eight years old. ## Why it happens A built-in oven door is heavy. Two panes of glass or more, a layer of insulation, a steel skin, a handle. All of that weight is carried by two hinges, and each hinge concentrates the load into a small pivot with a spring mechanism that has to balance a door that is heavy at the far end of a lever. Every time the door opens, that load cycles. Over years the pivots wear, the spring loses some of its balance, and the door begins to hang fractionally low at the outer edge. The bottom of the door still presses on the gasket, because the latch pulls it in there. The top of the door — the part furthest from both the hinge and the latch — stands off. Two things accelerate it dramatically. One is using the open door as a shelf for a heavy pan, or leaning on it. The other is salt air. In the coastal ZIPs, Ponte Vedra Beach and the Beaches and the older streets of St. Augustine, salt gets into the hinge pivots, they stiffen, and a stiff hinge takes shock loads instead of absorbing them. Doors in coastal kitchens sag years earlier than identical doors ten miles inland. ## Why two millimetres is a lot It seems implausible that a gap you cannot see could matter. Consider what is on either side of it. Inside, the cavity is at 375 degrees. Outside, the kitchen is at 75. That is a 300-degree difference across a slot that runs the full width of the door, positioned at the top of the cavity, which is exactly where hot air wants to leave. Convection does the rest. Hot air escapes along the top, cooler room air is drawn in low, and the oven never stops fighting a current it cannot close off. What you see is an oven that overshoots, recovers, overshoots again, and produces a swing at the food far wider than the display suggests. The average might even be right. The peaks are not, and baking cares about the peaks. ## What it is not It is worth separating hinge sag from the gasket, because they produce similar symptoms and get confused constantly. A gasket problem is a seal that has hardened, torn or taken a permanent set, and it usually shows up as leakage at a specific spot. Hinge sag is a geometry problem — the door is not in the plane it should be — and replacing a gasket on a sagging door achieves very little, because the new gasket simply gets held away from the frame like the old one was. We check the geometry first for that reason. A door that is square with a tired gasket is a gasket job. A door that is out of plane is a hinge job, and the gasket may well be fine. ## What we do We check the door alignment across the whole frame, look at hinge condition and free play, and confirm whether the latch is pulling the door in evenly. Then we measure what the cavity is actually doing across a full cycle, because that tells us whether the gap is costing you real temperature stability or whether something else is going on as well. The physics of why baking notices first is worth understanding. ## The complaint is almost never about temperature Nobody calls to say their oven is 30 degrees low. They call to say that something they have baked for years has stopped working. The bread crusts before the crumb sets. The cake sinks in the middle. The custard weeps. The cook adjusts the recipe, then adjusts it again, and eight months later something finally goes wrong badly enough at a holiday to prompt a phone call. By the time an oven is obviously broken, it has generally been wrong for a long time. ## Why baking is the early warning A roast is cooked to an internal temperature over a long period. If the oven is 25 degrees cool, the roast takes longer and comes out much the same. The error is absorbed by time. Baking does not work that way. A cake is a sequence of events that has to happen in the right order: the batter has to set at roughly the same moment the leavening finishes doing its work, the crust has to form after the rise rather than before it. Shift the temperature and the sequence reorders. The crust sets early and traps a rise that then collapses. That is why the same oven produces an acceptable roast and an unacceptable cake, and why bakers are almost always the ones who call us. ## Where the error comes from There are three usual sources and they feel identical from the outside. The temperature sensor. It is a resistance probe, and the control reads temperature by reading its resistance. As the probe ages, its curve moves. An oven whose sensor reads high will always come up short of the set point, and crucially, the error usually grows with temperature — 25 degrees low at 350 can be 60 low at 500. That is why the problem shows up at bread temperatures before it shows up anywhere else. The door seal. Gaskets harden, take a set, and stop sealing at the corners. Heat leaking out means the oven cycles more often trying to keep up. Preheats get long and the cavity never settles. The hinges. This is the one nobody guesses. Oven doors are heavy and their whole weight passes through two small pivots. Once those wear, the door drops and stands a couple of millimetres open along the top edge. Two millimetres is invisible to you and enormous to the oven. ## What we actually do about it We measure. A calibrated probe goes into the cavity and we log a full heat-and-hold cycle against the set point, because the display on the front tells you what the oven intends and nothing about what it achieves. Three numbers come out of that: the offset, whether the offset grows with temperature, and the size of the swing during a hold. A flat offset that does not change with temperature is often a calibration adjustment. An offset that widens as the oven gets hotter points at the sensor. A wide, slow swing during a hold points at heat escaping — the door, the gasket or the hinges. That distinction is the whole job. Recalibrating an oven that is actually leaking heat hides the problem for a few weeks and then it comes back worse. ## The local factor Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year pass over this part of Florida, and control boards do not enjoy them. A surge-damaged control often does not fail outright — it produces erratic cycling that reads as a temperature problem. When an oven has gone from accurate to strange rather than accurate to consistently cool, and there has been weather, the board is part of the diagnosis. Along the coast, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Neptune Beach and St. Augustine, salt air stiffens hinge pins, which brings the sag problem forward by years and makes the door a likelier culprit than it would be inland. That is the whole idea, and it exists because the two halves of a range want different things. Gas gives you instant, visible, infinitely variable control at the cooking surface, which is what anyone who cooks by eye wants under a pan. Electric gives you steadier, drier, more even heat in a closed cavity, which is what baking wants. So the manufacturer put both in one cabinet. Underneath the shared fascia and the shared row of knobs, though, they are genuinely separate systems: separate fuel, separate safety circuits, separate parts, separate failure modes. ## Why that matters when you call The most common conversation we have about these goes something like: the oven has gone cold and the front-left burner will not light. It gets described as one problem with the range. It is almost always two problems. They became noticeable in the same week because the range gets used every day and people notice things in batches, not because one caused the other. That has two practical consequences and we say both on the phone. An estimate for one half is not an estimate for the other. And diagnosing one does not diagnose the other, so if you have symptoms on both halves, tell us both when you book rather than after we arrive — it changes what we bring. ## What the gas half does when it fails Sealed burners are mechanically simple and fail in a short list of ways. An igniter that keeps clicking after the flame is up, which is nearly always a wet electrode or a burner cap sitting off square. A flame that has gone lazy on one side of the ring, which is a blocked port rather than a supply problem. A burner that will not hold a low simmer while its high flame looks perfect, which is the same blockage seen from the other end — the simmer runs through a much smaller path, so it notices restriction the high flame shrugs off. None of those have anything at all to do with the oven. ## What the electric half does when it fails Oven faults are quieter and slower. Temperature drift is the big one: the sensor's resistance curve moves as it ages, the oven comes up short, and the error grows with temperature. Twenty-five degrees low at 350 might be sixty low at 500. Bakers find this months before roasters do. Then there are elements that have failed open, relay boards that no longer switch cleanly, convection fans with worn bearings that howl once everything is hot, and door seals and hinges that let heat out along the top edge. Again, none of those have anything to do with the burners. ## The one thing they share The exception is the control board. Both halves report to it, and that is why a board problem is the one fault that can genuinely produce symptoms on the cooktop and in the oven at the same time. It is also why storms matter here. The spark jumps a small gap, gas ignites, and the module then has to decide whether it worked. On most sealed-burner cooktops that decision is made by sensing the flame through the same electrode: a flame conducts, so the module sees current and stops sparking. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the failure is so specific. The clicking does not mean the burner failed to light. It means the module cannot see the flame that is burning right in front of it. ## The two-minute fix that works most of the time The single most common cause is water. Something boiled over, or the cooktop was wiped down and liquid ran into the burner well, and now there is moisture on or around the electrode. To the sensing circuit, a wet electrode looks exactly like no flame at all. Turn the burner off and let everything cool. Lift the burner cap off. Dry the electrode, the well it sits in and the underside of the cap thoroughly with a paper towel. Then set the cap back down flat. That last part matters more than people expect. The cap has to sit square on its base so the flame comes up in a ring where the electrode can see it. A cap that is tilted, or resting on a crumb, or dropped into the wrong position after a deep clean, puts the flame slightly off from where the sensing circuit expects it and produces exactly the same endless clicking. Burner caps are not usually interchangeable between positions, by the way. If your cooktop had a thorough clean recently and one burner has misbehaved ever since, check that the caps went back in the right places. ## When it is not water If the burner is dry, the cap is square and it still clicks, the list gets shorter and more technical. The electrode ceramic may be cracked. The white insulator around the electrode keeps the spark going to the burner rather than to the nearest piece of metal. Once it is cracked, the spark takes the easy path to ground, and the flame sensing goes with it. You will often see the spark happening in the wrong place if you watch in a dark kitchen. The electrode may be out of position. It needs to sit at a specific distance from the burner. Knocked in cleaning, or bent by a pan being dragged across the top, it either sparks weakly or sits too far from the flame to sense it. Or the burner is partly blocked. A ring with dried boil-over in the ports burns unevenly, and if the dead section happens to be the part nearest the electrode, the module is looking at a gap where the flame should be. Occasionally it is the spark module itself, but that is far down the list, and a module that is genuinely failing usually misbehaves on more than one burner. ## Why every igniter fires at once This one is not a fault and it worries people constantly. A single spark module drives all the electrodes on the cooktop, wired in parallel, so turning on one burner fires every electrode on the appliance. That is how it was designed. It looks alarming and it is entirely normal. The rule is simple: all of them clicking briefly while one burner lights is correct. Any of them clicking after a flame is established is not. ## When to call If drying and reseating did not fix it, or if the clicking is constant even with all the knobs off — which usually points at a knob or switch not fully returning, or a genuinely failed module — it is a service call.
