The shortest drive we make

Our forty-mile service area is measured by road from Fruit Cove, which makes 32259 the one place on the list that is effectively a local call. If you are somewhere between Julington Creek Plantation and the river on SR-13, we are usually a few minutes away rather than the better part of an hour.

Dual-fuel ranges: two machines sharing a badge

The commonest single appliance in a Fruit Cove kitchen of this vintage is a dual-fuel range, and it is worth understanding what that actually is. A gas cooktop sits on top of an electric oven. Above the rail there are sealed burner ports, a spark module and a gas train; below it there is a resistive element, a convection fan and a control board. They share a fascia, a badge and very little else.

That matters on the phone. An oven that runs cool and a burner that keeps clicking are two separate repairs on two separate systems, and being told they are one fault is the fastest way to pay for the job twice. When both are happening at once we say so and price them as what they are.

The two faults we are called for most on this range are ignition and drift. Ignition first: a burner that keeps clicking after the flame is clearly lit is usually an electrode that cannot see the flame it just lit — wet from cleaning, or looking at a burner cap that is sitting slightly proud on one edge. Drift second: the oven sensor’s resistance curve moves as it ages, so the oven comes up short, and the error grows with the setpoint. An oven twenty-five degrees low at 350 can be sixty low at 500, which is why bakers notice long before roasters do.

Neither of those is diagnosed from a description. Both take ten minutes with the appliance running, which is the part of the visit the diagnostic fee is actually paying for.

Newer houses, newer problems

Most of Fruit Cove was built between the late 1990s and the mid 2010s, which means the kitchens were designed around built-in appliances from the start. Cabinet openings are the right size, there is usually a dedicated circuit where one is needed, and we do not spend much time here on the fitting problems that dominate an Avondale or Ortega job.

What we do see instead is the pattern typical of houses of that vintage: appliances that went in together, ten to twenty years ago, and are now reaching the end of their first service life at roughly the same time. When a Fruit Cove customer calls about an oven, there is a reasonable chance the hood blower and the warming drawer are on the same clock. We will tell you if we see it, and we will not pretend everything needs replacing at once.

Storms

It presents as an element that heats sometimes, a mode that stopped working while the rest of the appliance carries on, or a display that reads correctly while the oven does something else.
