Kitchens built before any of this existed
The 1900s through 1930s houses in Riverside, Avondale and Old Ortega have some of the best kitchens in Jacksonville to stand in and some of the worst to install a modern appliance into. They were built when a range was a range, when 30 inches was generous, and when the entire kitchen ran on a circuit that would now be considered inadequate for a countertop.
None of that is a criticism of the houses. It is simply the situation, and it explains a category of service call that has nothing to do with the appliance being faulty.
The three compromises we find
The opening. A 36-inch professional range going into a 30-inch opening means a cabinet run gets rebuilt, and rebuilds vary in quality. What we find years later is an appliance with unequal clearance at the sides, sometimes with cabinet material closer to the appliance than the installation instructions allow. The consequence is airflow. A range that cannot breathe runs hot behind the fascia, and heat is the thing that shortens the life of electronics more reliably than anything else. When an oven control fails at seven years in one house and fourteen in another, the difference is often nothing more than how much air was around it.
The circuit. A dual-fuel range needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit for the oven half. An all-gas range needs much less, but it still needs power for the spark module, controls and lighting. In these houses the supply was added or adapted during a remodel, and how well varies enormously. A marginal or shared circuit produces exactly the symptoms of a failing control board: intermittent faults, functions that work in the morning and not in the evening, behaviour that changes when something else in the kitchen is running. We check the supply first on an older-kitchen call for that reason.
The ductwork. This is the one that disappoints people most. A modern professional hood is a serious piece of ventilation, and it is frequently connected to a duct that was routed in another era for something far smaller, with more elbows than anyone would design in today and often a length of flexible duct where rigid should be. The blower cannot overcome that. The kitchen fills with smoke, the hood is blamed, and a new blower changes nothing.
What that means when you call us
We are a repair company, not a remodelling contractor, and we are not going to pretend a service call can fix a duct run. What we will do is tell you the truth about which category your problem is in, because that determines whether you should be spending money on us at all.
If the appliance is genuinely faulty, we fix it. If the appliance is healthy and the installation is the constraint, we say so, in writing, with what would actually need to change. That answer is worth the visit fee on its own, and it is a lot cheaper than a part that does not solve anything.
The same pattern outside Riverside
This is not only an old-Jacksonville problem. The older beach cottages in Neptune Beach, the historic houses in and around downtown St. Augustine, the 1960s and 1970s houses along Mandarin Road and the river side of Orange Park — all of them have had kitchens rebuilt around appliances the original structure never anticipated. The specific compromises differ, but the pattern is identical: an opening widened by hand, a circuit adapted, ductwork inherited.
The newer end of the service area has the opposite profile. Nocatee, Shearwater, SilverLeaf and Palencia were built around their appliances, so the fitting problems mostly disappear — and are replaced by the ventilation problem that a tightly built house creates, where a big hood can only exhaust as much air as the house is able to let back in.

Common follow-ups
Does an all-gas range still need electricity?
Yes. The spark module, the oven control, the light and any convection fan all run on power. It is a much smaller supply than a dual-fuel range needs, but a shared or marginal circuit still produces intermittent faults that look like a failing board.
How much clearance does a range need at the sides?
Follow the installation instructions for the specific appliance rather than a rule of thumb, because clearances vary by model and by what is next to it. What matters diagnostically is that squeezing an appliance into an opening that is a little too tight leaves it running hot behind the fascia for its whole life.
Can I reuse the existing hood duct after a remodel?
Sometimes, but it is worth checking rather than assuming. A duct that was routed for a small recirculating hood decades ago will limit a modern professional hood no matter what blower is fitted, and that limit is invisible until the kitchen fills with smoke.
